Toh Ee Wei: Everyone has their own story.

1

November 2016, Bilbao, Spain. Less than 2 months after she became 16, Toh Ee Wei got second runner-up in the mixed doubles event at her first World Junior Championships, as the only under-18 winner on the podium.

It was her first major tournament individual medal at the junior level. Her badminton road started nine years ago, and from then on, she began her road to more medals and awards.

Many people think that Toh Ee Wei is a very active and passionate player on the court. This may also have something to do with her experiences and personality over the years.

Born on September 18, 2000, Toh Ee Wei is from Malacca, Malaysia, a city known internationally for the Straits of Malacca, where you can see patches of red rooftops and a beach not far away. While playing badminton with her sister when she was a little girl, her family noticed Ee Weis talent, and so at the age of seven, she began professional training at a local badminton club. At 13, she entered the Bukit Jalil Sports School through selection, practicing in the mornings, then attending classes afterward, then training in the afternoons, and then studying in the evenings, along with many other young children of the same age. Early in 2018, she made it to the national team through a try-out.

The earliest podium record available on the web was in 2011. At that time, the tournament for 11-year-old kids only had two divisions: doubles and singles, and she made it to the quarterfinals in doubles and the semifinals in singles. Now more than a decade later, if we look back at the opponents she encountered in the tournament, some of them have gone to other countries to continue to chase their badminton dreams, some continue to play singles, some switch from singles to men's doubles and mixed doubles sectors, and many more names on the list could no longer be seen in badminton tournaments.

The result of the 2016 World Junior Championships was a "surprise" for many: in the previous team competition, Toh Ee Wei as the youngest of the five members of the women's team, did not get much of a chance to play. Her mixed doubles partner was Chen Tang Jie from the Petaling Badminton Club, who belonged to a completely different growth path from her and had only been partnered with her once in a tournament in September. For this time their partnership was also a temporary one. They only trained together for one week in France before the tournament, and after the tournament, they soon went back to their respective paths.

This "magical journey" was not smooth sailing. In the fifth round, they encountered the sixth seed, when they first lost a set and then reversed, and won by 23:21 in the rubber game. Her partner commented that "she did not give up, which also inspired me". In the quarter-final it was also a three-set reversal, winning by 21:19. "She's only 16 years old and she is a dynamite player." Just as they had hoped for, they "kept winning" all the way to the podium. "I didn't expect to go this far before the tournament," said Ee Wei, adding that she also "has a long way to go" in the future.

This is the typical beginning of a badminton player's story, and if everything goes well, we can almost see a standard growing path for a rising badminton star here. What a talented, sincere, and hard-working little girl she is... Wish you could be kind to her, goddess of badminton.

Toh Ee Wei was involved in mixed doubles, women's doubles, and women's singles sectors during her junior time, but her accomplishments were mainly in the women's doubles sector. While winning a medal in mixed doubles in 2016, she also teamed up with Pearly Tan at the World Junior Championships and made it to the fourth round. The pair have since won gold medals at the Malaysian Junior Open and the Dutch Junior, a bronze medal at the German Junior, and bronze and silver medals at youth tournaments in Thailand and Indonesia. In 2018, Toh Ee Wei's training was also focused on the women's doubles, "I hope that I can win a medal in my last World Junior Championship", and ultimately, she won silver medals with Pearly Tan at the 2018 Asian Junior Championships and World Junior Championships. Hopefully we can continue our partnership in senior tournaments."

"I'm so proud of the girls", said the coach, "Winning the silver medal has been a huge achievement. They played their best and gave everything on the court. If they continue to work hard, they will definitely be number one in Malaysia. There is no doubt that they will be world champions".

And she didn't leave other sectors behind, competing in club competitions while also winning gold medals in both mixed doubles and women's doubles at Sukan Malaysia 2018 and National Junior Championships 2018. After the World Junior Championships, she signed up for a couple of junior tournaments, hoping to start her senior stage with more junior tournament medals. At the moment, she was regarded as a "secret weapon" by the coach and was seen as a rising star in doubles.

But the rite of passage for Ee Wei before she went senior was an illness.

2

Sinusitis, surgery, complication symptoms...She had to hit the pause button for the next stage of her journey.

The illness was not very sudden. She had already had to take medication and sprays because of a sinus infection a couple of years ago, and the schedule arrangement of badminton tournaments, which usually causes late-night matches, made it hard for her to rest well and affected her recovery. And this time she had to undergo surgery.

It was not just a surgery, however. She returned to the team after the surgery, but the intense training led to a recurrence of the illness. At first, she only required a temporary leave of absence for the surgery, but then the recurrence made it necessary for her to take several leaves of absence to recuperate. The frequent absences were not allowed by the badminton association, and she was then faced with the difficult choice of either not being able to recuperate well or having to leave the national team to recuperate. For the sake of her future career, quite reluctantly, the rising star of badminton chose to leave. Standing out at the age of 13 to enter the Bukit Jalil Sport School, and working hard for many years to make it to the national team, however, at this point, she had to hand in her application to quit.

Her partner Pearly felt very sad: "I was really sad when she applied to leave the team. Unfortunately, our partnership ended this way."

"It was a tough decision", said Ee Wei, "but I know I made the right choice because I really need time to recover. Once I'm healthy again, I'll be back on the court and to training."

"I still love the sport and I can assure everyone that I still want to be a world-class player."

Foreshadowing laid in the past is now echoed one by one in opposite ways. But as always, Ee Wei is still eager to play.

3

After a break, Ee Wei wanted to continue playing as an independent player, training and playing at her own pace while recuperating, then gradually adapting to the competition schedule and becoming a professional player. Similar to the well-known controversy that happened three years later, the badminton association rejected her request and refused to sign her up for international tournaments (BWF requires that both national team players and professional players need to sign up through their local badminton associations). Maybe it was because of the years she spent on the national team, or maybe it was because no one could bear to let go of such a talented and energetic player. In the end, after weighing and negotiating, Ee Wei decided to return to the national team. The initial date was set for May 2019, but was postponed to March 2020 because her physical condition was "not ready". The final date of her return was set for July 2020 because of the pandemic. During this period she fortunately received some coaching and sponsorship and has continued to train and play in clubs, although she has still not been allowed to play in international tournaments.

After returning to the team, she is still in the women's doubles, teaming up with Anna Cheong, who together with her won the gold medal at Sukma 2018. Toh Ee Wei cherished the opportunity, and although her long absence from the team and recurring medical conditions had left her physically behind her peers, she worked very hard and her positive attitude was appreciated by the coach. The probationary period passed quickly and she was allowed to stay in the team.

The pandemic started in early 2020 affected everyone, especially, players who graduated from junior tournaments in 2018 and 2019. Many lower-level tournaments were suspended and strict travel restrictions were added. Players had to bear high risk and uncertainty. It has been two years since she left the team due to illness. In these two years, illness, pandemic, organizational arrangements, etc., a variety of factors intertwined, and thus she wasnt able to participate in any single BWF international tournament. The endless training day after day under the Malaysian movement control order brought great psychological pressure on her, and she even once had to suspend training due to depressed emotions. In January 2021, she handed in another application to quit the team.

It seemed like everything was still in 2018. That was the year when she had just won the Asian and World Junior Championships Silver Medal, graduated from the junior stage, and headed into senior tournaments with expectations from those around her and herself. The future was promising. But time waits for no one and flies without pause, with her affected by both the worlds illness and her own illness.

"I was frustrated, the Covid-19 pandemic was getting to me and I was struggling as a women's doubles player. It felt like I was at a dead end and the only option then was to give up.

4

At this time, the mixed doubles team was having some personnel and pairing changes. Fortunately, Paulus, the Mixed Doubles coach, thought that Toh Ee Wei's playing style was more suitable for Mixed Doubles, so he invited her to the mixed doubles group.

How important was this to her?"He wasd more than just a coach, he looked out for us like a parent. I couldn't help myself but cry when I heard that he was going to leave us (later in 2022). It was only for a short while, but he has done so much for me. I will never forget that." said Ee Wei.

Leaving behind all her honors and experiences in the women's doubles sector, Toh Ee Wei's "magical journey" in mixed doubles continued.

Re-teaming with junior time partner Choong Hon Jian, the pair trained for around a month and seized the few opportunities to compete during the pandemic to win the Polish Open title. "Really feel good to be back on court after so long," she says, with her usual love of the game, "It had been too many things happened. " The pair then went on to seize their victory, winning three consecutive lower-level international tournaments in which they competed. "Enjoy the winning moments, we did it." Media and fans at the time had high hopes for the new duo, and the victories after switching to the mixed doubles sector seemed to give her a new hopeful path. It was already mid-2021, 28 months after her last tournament, and what a long wait this was. From Ee Wei's posts on social media at that time, we cant see many complaints about the pain in the past, but it was more about her cherishing and grateful attitude for the title and peoples help.

"I want to be the best."

And then?

Three consecutive victories later, her match record was paused. I don't know what it's like to finally grab a lifeline after setbacks, only to have another illness stop you. The story after that is that she was ill once again.

Bone tuberculosis, according to information on the Internet, is a destructive illness caused by the invasion of Mycobacterium tuberculosis on bone or joints, which usually has a slow onset and insidious symptoms, and is thus difficult to diagnose. Common symptoms include joint dysfunction, swelling, lesions associated with the affected area, and severe pain due to the progression of the disease. There is a high probability that it will cause damage to the spine and other bones and joints, and affect muscles.

Toh Ee Wei's memories of bone tuberculosis include another sudden interruption of her career, constant blood draws and tests to find the cause of the disease, her mother's tears, difficulty in breathing and endless pain, sleepless nights, and months of hospitalization, treatment, and rehab. ‘No muscle, no energy, no strength for three months.’ Her birthday wish was to "get back on the field as soon as possible", and we could see from photos that she was always the one wearing the thickest clothes. She wrote "I hope everyone is healthy" twice on social media, but at the same time she herself was going through pain and hopelessness.

News at that time rarely talked about her illness, but more often than not, it was mainly about the three consecutive mixed doubles championships she got at the beginning of 2021. Today, many news still report this experience vaguely. Perhaps because it's hard to imagine what she went through three years ago from her current energetic and active performance. "My body has been in a very weak state," "I'm really helpless," "I hope I can be safe and get back to playing on the court as soon as possible," "My sickness is quite complicated" ...... Perhaps we can only piece a little bit of the pain and helplessness of Ee Weis situation from her words on social media. The dawn after a long wait is like the sunrise in the Arctic Circles winter; after a flash of light, there is then an endless night.

5

After a few more months, she finally got better, and then followed was rehabilitation, which was also uneasy. From then on, Toh Ee Wei always has a waist protector with her. Back on the court after a month of rehab, "everything needed to be rebuilt", regaining her techniques, rebuilding her muscles, physical training, and adapting to the rhythm of games ......What others took for granted, like the speed, the strength, the breathing, and the stamina, she all needed to slowly build. The initial stage of rehabilitation took her about three months. When her teammates were competing and guffawing on the court, she had to start recovering her body, step by step; when she was able to play on the court with her teammates, she still needed to take extra time out for recovery training. Together with rehab is to endure sore muscles after recovery.

This time, still in mixed doubles. The first stop was the 2022 Orleans Masters, nine months since her last appearance, partnered with big brother Chan Peng Soon, a senior who was very important to her and had sent her encouraging messages when she was seriously ill. She was partnered with Hoo Pang Ron after that. It was not an easy deal to return to international tournaments just after illness; she then faced several early exits. At this time, the pandemic was not yet over, and many tournaments were canceled. Uncertainty still remains high.

In such uncertainty, Ee Wei won Sukma champion titles in womens doubles and mixed double sectors, and meanwhile, the mixed doubles duo Toh Ee Wei and Hoo Pang Ron picked up steam. As a new duo starting from scratch, they slowly made their way into the top 30 in less than ten tournaments (with a highest ranking of 20th later, nine tournaments together in total), when the ranking frozen policy of BWF was not yet lifted. They made it to quarter finals and semifinals in some of the tournaments and of course some early exits as well. At the end of 2022, before the Australian Open, less than seven months before the start of the Olympic qualification period, the pair entered the first round of the draw to meet their teammates, who had just been paired together for a month.

What happened after that to let the decision makers reverse their decision, whether it was an impromptu move or a response to fan outcry or something else, or the impact of an injury to her former women's doubles partner, we still don't know. But all in all, within a few days, they withdrew from several tournaments, including the Australian Open. Eventually, several new mixed doubles pairs came out, with only five months remaining before the Olympic qualification period, embarked on the new challenges, and started from scratch.

"If we didn't perform well then, we wouldn't be where we are now". Partnering with Chen Tang Jie, Ee Wei faced the No. 1 seed of their first tournament (now also a top-ranked mixed doubles pair) who had a first-round vacancy. Luckily, the Challenge went relatively smoothly, and fortunately, they had just enough notional ranking points to be able to sign up for higher-level tournaments. They made it to finals in the first few lower-level tournaments; and in the pair's third tournament, the S1000 Malaysian Open, with their eye-catching orange haircut, they went to the quarter-final as the last hope of the Malaysian team. These were followed by the Asian Championships and a few tournaments in Europe, with both breakthroughs and losses.

Despite all the bumps in the road at the beginning of 2023, and despite a thrilling second round by a rubber game win in 23:21, Toh Ee Wei celebrated her first open tournament title at the Orleans Masters. It may have been a little bit late, but it also came just right. Few people can hold back their tears in such a situation. This gold medal was a beautiful comeback after all the tribulations that befell upon her over the years and the title made her able to catch up with the Paris Olympic cycle, which should have belonged to her.

Coming back in 2022 at the Orleans Masters, and winning in the same place in 2023; luckily, it is a happy foreshadowing this time.

"My journey hasn't been easy."

6

"She is a very daring player" commented doubles senior Koo Kien Keat, who shares the same birthday as Ee Wei, after winning the Orleans Masters. Toh Ee Wei then won the Taipei Open with her partner at the end of June, which was Malaysia's second open tournament title in 2023 and first gold medal at the event after Koo Kien Keat/Wong Pei Tty in 2004.

I usually think of the Sudirman Cup, the first tournament of Olympic qualification, as a little turning point for her. The Sudirman Cup name list was announced at the beginning of April, and a total of four mixed doubles pairs were selected. In fact, the Asian team championships at the beginning of the year were her debut in senior team events, but her performance then was not particularly impressive. And this time, perhaps unforeseen by everyone at the time of the list's announcement, that a month and a half later, she and her partner will score a crucial point to help Malaysia reach the Sudirman Cup podium once again.

The most crucial match should be in the quarterfinal. Before the match, the mixed doubles game became the biggest unknown since they were a new pair. The opponents, who are experienced top-ten players, won the first set, and the scoreline in the second set was close. Finally, their opponent gave the first victory to Malaysia by a single-digit score in the third set, and at this moment, in a sense, Ee Wei and her partner Tang Jie officially took over the task of fighting for an Olympic quota. In the games videos before mid-2023, you could see that she was clearly gifted with talent and aptitude, and was daring and spontaneous in her on-court performances. Then after mid-2023, what became apparent to her were the traces of hard training day after day and the responsibility she carried. In her post-game update, Toh Ee Wei mentioned this tournament together with the World Junior Championships seven years ago. From bronze to bronze, she has experienced so much in these seven years.

In August 2023, after the World Championships, Ee Wei and her partner became Malaysias XD1. In September 2023, a week before her birthday, Ee Wei reached the top ten in the world rankings for the first time.

In the Arctic Open after the 2023 Asian Games, they brought fans a surprising performance in the first few rounds. However, after this outstanding performance, she suffered another unexpected back injury. Clenching her teeth in the remaining tournaments, she was fortunate to get a spot in the World Tour Finals, adding one more footnote to this extraordinary year.

At the end of 2023, Toh Ee Wei/Chen Tang Jie was nominated by the BWF as a candidate for Most Improved Player of the Year. This nomination brought some minor controversy at the time, but I think she deserve it. People will find her deserving of this nomination whether by looking back at her experiences along the way, or focusing on the unforgettable year of 2023, and all the preparations she made beforehand for her breakthrough in this year. Not to mention the rankings improvement within the year, from being unranked at the end of 2022 to being seeded at the end of 2023, when seedings were assigned for the Malaysian Open 2024, the first high-level event in her home country at the beginning of the year.

The fourth tournament in early 2024, the Thailand Masters, was a small one in many high-level tournaments. Yet there is something special about this silver medal she won here. At the beginning of the partnership, people all expect them to be black horses. But one year later, people now usually take their victory for granted and naturally raise their expectations, putting them under huge pressure. With a wrist injury that prevented her from normal training before the tournament, and food poisoning that hospitalized her during the tournament, the silver medal was not easy to come by.

7

On April 30, 2024, everything about Olympic qualification was settled. As almost the smallest of the mixed doubles name list, and perhaps the pair that started the latest, Toh Ee Wei and partner Chen Tang Jie were among the top names. "We couldn't have asked for a better start. It was an uphill battle from the very beginning of our partnership and we had to join forces to rise to the occasion."

"I'm glad to have resisted all the pressure to get to where we are now."

After reading this I finally realize that all the stress and pressure that fans have worried about, has been weighing on her like a boulder as well.

Their Paris 2024 ended with a painful ending. Despite this, I still want to highlight this challenging but wonderful trip. Before the start, everyone says it's a lucky draw for Toh Ee Wei and Chen Tang Jie, assuming that they will easily get the second position of group D and proceed to the quarter final. But things did not go this way. The first two games all contained sets ended with deuce. The seemingly 'easy' battles did bring a lot of trouble to them, especially when they were 18:20 down in the second game, gaining match point several times, but finally and luckily, they won. Things became different in the third game, when top 2 of the team battle with each other and they won over the No.2 seed after 17:21 down in the first set, making it one of the big upsets in Paris Olympics.

“The Malaysian player Toh Ee Wei became the focus of the whole game with her brilliant performance. ”

Even the professional commentator of TVB praised her for her dazzling performance today, whether it was her fighting eyes, superb skills and tactics, or even her timely replacement. In addition, Toh Ee Wei was passionate throughout the whole game. Not only did she celebrate and cheer for herself and her partner in different ways, but every time she lost a point, she would actively encourage her teammate Chen Tang Jie to stay calm. After winning the game, Toh Ee Wei lay on the ground, feeling heroic and unrestrained.

Then another plot twist happened in quarterfinal. The game went on normally until she dived to save the shuttle and fell heavily to the ground. They worked hard after that to catch up with their opponent's score, but luck is not on their side this time.

I don't know how many times this has happened: she grab the chance, but then injuries or illnesses came to her. But as always, she tends to not speak out the pain. She just persevered until the last point.

After the game, people say is it worth it to save that shuttle with such high cost? I don't know the answer. But I know that if she didn't do that, then this wouldn't be her.

Over and over again, she is a strong fighter who never lacks the courage to start from scratch. Thus, I never doubt her persistence and her hard work. All the late harvest is what she deserves, and she is more than that. Looking back at many turning points of her fate, there was always someone or something that reached out to give her a hand, but the one she should thank the most is herself.

(Lastly, the most important purpose of writing these is not to simply emphasize her suffering or to portray a very tragic image of her. She always tended to describe her experiences optimistically and positively, and these words are only intended to let more people know about her story.

Also, there may have been bumps in the road in the past, but each partnership brings something different and is a unique experience rather than a detour. All people deserve to be honored for their struggles.)

  1. How both qualified for the Olympic catches my eyes. I watched all their games in YouTube including 2016. In 2016 where they won bronze, I noticed both had this power when they go into attacking mode back then.

I had retired and thank you for making badminton interesting to me again, especially MD.

From my heart I will always pray you be in pink of health, including your partner too. Both of you collect as many medals as possible while making your way to LA2028.

I believe both of you will find that momentum again.

    ❤️ u both.
